He was talking about his new book that covers the Baby Boomer generation. What struck me in this Q & A was not anything he said about that generation, but something he said about our own. He was talking about war and how the war today does not require any sacrifice of those who are not serving or have a family member serving. We have no extra taxes, no shortages, no obligation to help those who are serving. And it made me feel very selfish.

While I feel awful about the sacrifices others are making, I haven't made my own. I haven't stepped up to help. So many families are being put under tremendous emotional, psychological and financial pressure. I'm not serving in the military, but is there something I can do to help?

In looking online for an answer to this question I found one source right here at the University of Minnesota. The state contacts for an organization called Operation: Military Kids. The website and contact information are as follows:

http://www.operationmilitarykids.org/public/home.aspx

Operation: Military Kids thanks the 15,000 Minnesota kids that have been affected through recent troop deployment in service to our country. We are proud of YOU! And salute your sacrifice. Helping kids feel connected, active and supported are the goals of Minnesota Operation: Military Kids.

For information on Operation: Military Kids in Minnesota, please contact:Jim Deidrick, MN 4-H Military Liaison at deidr001@umn.edu or 612-624-7171 ORAmber Runke, MN OMK Program Specialist at runk0014@umn.edu or 612-624-8198

I'm going to check it out.
